A real starter kit

Hey,

I had a good pm sent to me the other day.

Anyway, to try and take your mind off killing the Justice League, I was wondering if you could talk about some common/Uncommon/Rare figures that you would give to someone whose just starting out? I'm trying to make 2 300 point modern teams to use as a Demo of sorts and any input would be appreciated. Thanks again and keep up the great work.

All these figures are low rarity and at the highest rares. No SR's or chases. I think this will help a lot of players out with a cheap way to start to get figures that are playable. Just give players this list as a starting point and work from there. Trust me I don't think everyone should own every figure in this list and there is some overlap in roles and effects. That is on purpose so you can pick or drop the figures that fit your play style.

  1. I think that in talking specifically towards new players that when giving them a click to play with it should have as few special powers as possible. As a new player it is hard enough to learn the core rules and the standard powers, but then adding into some special powers especially those with paragraphs of text to explain can make it even more confusing

  2. Your post answers an unasked question, "What are some figs that would make a new player competitive?" but not the question asked. :)

Starter and fast forces figures are pretty good for teaching, as they usually have workable point values for making 300-point teams, and generally have some synergy. Resist the temptation to give new players some powerful one-man army fig or they will think that the whole key to winning is HSS or 11 AV, 5 damage.

I'd keep figs in the 50-75-pt range to start off, so that no fig is much more powerful than the others. Just explain powers as they show up on the dials (running down the ones showing on both teams before play begins). Keep the new player informed of the options he or she has (and potential consequences if some of those actions are counter-productive, like basing your CCE fig with a ranged attacker).

  3. If you're gonna give this theoretical dude mole man, at least let him get Giganto the mole monster colossal too.
